Goodall the Great

September 16, 2014

enl_Alex_GoddallGoodall was named best on ground by the umpires on a remarkable eight occasions on his way to a total of 28 votes to record a comfortable four-vote win from Manly-Warringah midfielder, Connor Pettersson. Selby Lee-Steere (North Shore) rounded out the top three on 19 votes. Affectionately known as “Cheese,” Goodall has been a long term member of the Demons midfield, notching over 100 senior games, and has built his reputation on a great defensive, close checking focus. A no-fuss, tough as they come midfielder, it is hard to miss Goodall not only for his stocky frame and red hair, but also for the fact he is often at the bottom of every pack. Like Simon Black, he has great vision with both hand and foot in traffic. A perennial member of the representative arena for the past three seasons, where for the second year running the coaching staff named him as best afield in AFL Sydney’s big win over AFL Canberra in June (to go with his best on ground against AFL Cairns last year). He was named as Number 2 in the AFL Sydney’s Top 20 players and has been named in the AFL Sydney Team of the Year in 2007, 2008, 2012, 2013 and 2014. He was named Pennant Hills Best and Fairest in 2012- the year he recorded his previous best Phelan Medal result; fourth behind current Sydney Swan, Dane Rampe on 15 votes. Goodall was arguably the Demons’ best player in 2013 and his absence from their Grand Final loss to Manly-Warringah last season could well have been the difference. ‘Cheese’s’ ability to perform on the big stage is unquestioned and he will be a vital player for the Demon’s chances as they look for redemption in Saturday’s Grand Final rematch against Manly-Warringah.
